The SDP president and Croatia's Prime Minister, Ivica Racan is
expected to address the press after the sitting.
At the start of the open part of the session, most senior party
officials and government members Slavko Linic, Mato Crkvenac and
Davorko Vidovic explained to the head committee members why
Croatia's economy could not react overnight to accelerated changes
the party had been implementing.
They said that it was not possible to immediately start the
development phase in 2000, because Croatia's economy was facing
collapse and Croatia was in isolation.
It was up to the SDP to financially revive the economy and encourage
investments. Linic said that during the former Croatian Democratic
Union rule, "an enormous amount of money was lost due to laziness,
wastefulness and a lack of organisation".
He denied that the SDP conducted the privatisation process by
selling Croatia to foreigners.
Finance Minister Crkvenac said that wages went up during the
coalition rule.
The SDP Head Committee is currently debating the situation in the
party. The discussion is closed to public.
