BELGRADE, March 22 (Hina) - The so-called Zemun mob gang had planned
the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic on
several occasions before a sniper did shoot him dead in front of the
government building on March 12, Serbian Justice Minister Vladan
Batic has said. #L#
He told Vecernje novosti daily of Saturday that several days before
Djindjic was slain, a sniper was supposed to shoot at him, while he
was standing on the steps leading to the Yugoslav parliament, from a
nearby building. The attempt bombed because of many television
crews on which the assassins and the organisers had not counted, he
said.
Batic stressed Djindjic was killed the day after a protected
witness was interviewed in connection with the Zemun gang.
"Until recently there was a public bid for the lynching and
elimination of the prime minister. Thanks to such a climate, the
people who murdered him counted on a coup following the
assassination, that the authorities would burst like a bubble of
soap and their cronies would grab power, pardon them as ostensible
patriots, and together rule the state," said Batic.
He announced the probe into Djindjic's assassination would
continue and be expanded to include people from the judiciary,
prosecution, courts and police.
