Krbava minnow (Phoxinellus krbavensis) was discovered in a cave in
the area of Krbavsko Polje, while Jadova minnow was discovered in
the Jadova river near the village of Ploca.
The fish were discovered by a Slovene amateur zoologist Primoz
Zupancic.
Croatian minnows are 7-10 cm long and inhabit the confluences of Mt.
Dinara rivers, most of which flow into the Adriatic. Both species,
like all minnows, are relics and have survived geological and
climatic changes during ice ages several hundred thousand years
ago.
Those changes have limited their habitat to the Karst rivers and
they spend most of the time in underground waters.
Zoologists have so far discovered ten species of the Phoxinellus
genus and they are all endemic. Nine species were discovered in
Croatia and five in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
