The policeman was shot on the left side of his abdomen and is not in
critical condition. He underwent surgery in a local hospital in
Koprivnica, a spokesman for Koprivnica-Krizevci County police told
Hina.
Police from three Croatian countries and their Hungarian
colleagues, aided by a helicopter, are searching for the two men who
fled aboard their boat, Drazen Magdic added.
According to Magdic, the two police officers who were patrolling
the area in a car at about 6 am spotted the two men, one of whom wore a
camouflage uniform, crossing the Drava towards the Croatian bank.
When they stepped on the bank and saw the policemen, one of them
opened fire and wounded the police officer who managed to fire
back.
The spokesman said the police officers did not wear bullet-proof
vests as they were on regular patrol.
An investigation is underway. The two attackers are believed to be
illegal aliens or traffickers in humans.
