"It's still important for Croatia to have several relevant parties
which may help democratise Croatia's political climate," he told
state radio, adding parliamentary elections most likely would not
be held before spring next year.
Commenting on public opinion polls which showed that the strongest
opposition party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), was
becoming increasingly popular, Mesic said polls were not entirely
reliable but were important to indicate trends.
One may conclude from them that people are not happy with the pace of
changes they voted for at the last elections or with the fact that
their effects are not sufficiently visible, said Mesic, adding the
polls would be more reliable as the ballot approached.
Speaking about the Iraqi crisis, Mesic said Croatia's economy
should not feel its economic fallout although the price of petrol
might go up if the war lasted longer.
Mesic said Croatia must maintain good relations with countries of
both the European Union, whose member it wished to become in 2007,
and the United States, of which it asked support for admission to
NATO.
Independently of who represents which option, Croatia must
negotiate with both sides, he concluded.
