In Sisak, the delegation held talks with representatives of the
OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) co-
ordinating centre, local authorities and returnees, as well as of
Bosnian Croat refugees settled in Sisak-Moslavina County.
The talks tackled the reconstruction of houses damaged in the war
and the restoration of confidence among local population.
The OSCE officials were accompanied by Tomislav Vidosevic, the head
the government's office for co-operation with international
organisations, and Rikardo Marelic, the head of the OSCE regional
office in Sisak.
Refugee returns, the restitution of property, and human rights were
the main topics of the talks which the delegation led with heads of
local OSCE offices in Pakrac, Karlovac, Petrinja and Hrvatska
Kostajnica.
Local authorities informed the OSCE delegation about the
significant progress made in the process of the return of refugees
and the restitution of their property. They also talked about
difficulties in providing adequate accommodation for some 18,000
Croats who had arrived there during the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
More than 90 percent of Bosnian Croat refugees in Sisak-Moslavina
County have voiced a wish to remain in this part of Croatia,
according to opinion polls conducted by their associations. It was
said that Croatian authorities should support their residence in
Croatia.
