VELIKA/VOCIN, Feb 9 (Hina) - A large habitat of a rare and protected
hardy plant, the so-called "Ozimnica" (i.e. eranthis hyemalis),
has been recently discovered near the summit of the largest hill in
the natural park "Papuk", eastern Croatia. #L#
Papuk is rich in protected floral species, and of 44 kinds of plants
protected by the 1958 national law, sixteen (16) can be found in
this park.
The newly-discovered habitat of "ozimnica" (or the winter flower in
an unofficial translation) is at 900 metres above sea-level, at the
site where man has so far exerted no influence on the nature.
A team of Papuk rangers, who found the habitat of this plant which
grows under the snow cover, regard the discovery especially
important in light of the fact that the number of such species has
been on the decline due to forest clearance and the use of
pesticides and other chemical substances.
The natural part Papuk, which covers a 336-square-kilometre-large
area, and is famous for its relief contrasts and geological strata,
some of which are old up to 160 million years, as well as for
different features of the composition of the soil.
