PRISTINA, Feb 3 (Hina) - The U.N. mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) and
NATO's peacekeepers (KFOR) are responsible for security in Kosovo,
the U.N. civil administrator there, Michael Steiner, said on Monday
after Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic asked that the Yugoslav
army and police be enabled to return to Kosovo. #L#
Steiner's statement came in response to letters Djindjic sent him
and Admiral Gregory Johnson, NATO commander for Southeast Europe,
seeking the return of up to 1,000 Yugoslav troops to Kosovo if
international forces there should be reduced in the event of an
attack on Iraq.
Kosovo's President Ibrahim Rugova refused to comment on Djindjic's
suggestion. He travelled to the United States yesterday together
with Prime Minister Bajram Rexhepi, at the invitation of the U.S.
Congress.
