The Libra bench will move that parliament, when passing a law on
community service, adopts a conclusion binding the government to
consider the possibility of revoking mandatory conscription by May
30, said Jozo Rados.
If the Sabor turns down the motion, Libra will move a law on revoking
mandatory military service, he told a news conference.
Rados said that no European country had both conscripts and a
professional military, and that today Croatia lived in less
dangerous times and in better national security.
Recalling that last year the number of requests for community
service had gone up 30 times, Rados pointed to the need of amending
the community service bill that parliament is debating.
"The higher number of requests for community service only reflects
the citizens' modern attitude towards defence and serving the
homeland, (which is) much more modern than that of Croatia's
politicians who are still under the influence of the more
conservative members of the (military)."
