ZAGREB, Jan 30 (Hina) - Representatives of the Social Democratic
(SDP) bench in parliament told journalists on Thursday the Croatian
government and the ruling coalition parties continually stressed
the need to develop islands. #L#
The statement comes in the wake of claims some associations and
units of local government and self-government have placed in the
media to the effect that the incumbent authorities have done
nothing over the past three years to develop and revitalise
islands.
According to the SDP bench, the government's pro-Adriatic Sea
orientation may be seen in the building of a highway that will
connect Zagreb in the north and Split on the southern coast.
More than 1.7 billion kuna has been invested in islands between 1999
and 2001, including 576 million to subsidise ferry services and
build roads and 374 million in municipal services, the bench said.
It added that more than 700 million kuna had been set aside in the
2003 state budget for the development of islands.
