"Customs and value added tax must be established on the state level
in Bosnia and Herzegovina," Paddy Ashdown said in the southern town
of Mostar.
Bosnia has two customs administrations, one in both entities -- the
Serb republic and the Croat-Muslim federation. Bosnian Serb
authorities have opposed the introduction of VAT on several
occasions.
Commenting on such objections, Ashdown said that failure to
introduce VAT would cost Bosnia admission to Europe as well as EUR60
million in assistance.
The Briton said the task of his office was to cooperate with the
country's new authorities and make Bosnia the most advantageous
business area in the Balkans.
