PULA, Jan 21 (Hina) - Umag's maritime police caught an Italian fishing boat in Savudrija Bay Monday morning. The crew were fishing in Croatian territorial waters and refused to turn off its engines after police demanded that the boat
stop. Police then fired several warning shots, after which the Italian boat left Croatian waters, Istria police spokeswoman Stefanija Prosenjak-Zumber reported Tuesday.

She said Umag police had first issued warnings to the fishermen
using light and sound signals that they were in Croatian waters.
Since the Italians ignored the warning signals, police fired
several warning shots, first into the air, and then towards the
boat, after which the boat abandoned the Croatian waters.
Prosenjak-Zumber said the shots might have caused material damage
to the fishing boat, but an estimate of the damage could not be
carried out as the boat had refused to stop.
