Delegations of the Croatian parliament, camp survivors, Homeland
War associations and the towns of Pakrac and Lipik laid wreaths and
lit candles where the camp was once located. Mass was also
celebrated.
From early August and late December 1991, when Bucje was liberated,
298 people were detained in the camp set up by Croatian Serb rebels.
A dozen were killed while more than 40 are still being traced, said
ex-inmate Slavoljub Solar.
Speaking on behalf of parliament, Jadranka Kosor said: "We are
confident the truth about the tortured, killed and missing inmates
of the Bucje camp will come to light, and that those responsible for
the crimes in the camp will be held to account and punished
accordingly. Their names are known and there is no reason why they
shouldn't get the punishment they deserve".
Pakrac mayor Damir Spancic said the town's authorities, at the
urging of the local branch of the HVIDR-a association of disabled
war veterans, had launched court proceedings against Veljko
Dzakula and those responsible for the Bucje crimes.
"The independent judiciary has told us there are several Dzakulas
living in Pakrac and that it is unknown who the one in question is,"
he said.
