THE UNITED NATIONS, Jan 13 (Hina) - Dubravka Simonovic on Monday
became the first Croatian woman-member of the U.N. Committee on the
Elimination of Discrimination Against Women. #L#
Head of the Croatian Foreign Ministry's Human Rights Department,
Simonovic became the UN Committee's member at its 28th session
which began today.
By electing its representative to this body, Croatia has for the
first time been included into the work of a committee of experts who
follow the execution of conventions in the field of human rights in
certain countries.
Committee members are elected on an individual basis and their
mandates last four years.
The body consists of 23 experts who follow the execution of the U.N.
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination
Against Women which was adopted at the General Assembly and came
into effect in 1981.
