OPEN-AIR NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS IN MAJOR CROATIAN CITIES

The celebration started at 05.30 pm on New Year's Eve and lasted until early Wednesday morning. #L# Over 20,000 residents of the biggest Croatian coastal city also packed the central square and Riva in Split to welcome the new year. Members of an association called "Blue Planet" waited for the midnight in cages of the Split Zoo to warn of poor conditions in which animals are placed in this zoo. About 18,000 citizens and guests also enjoyed an open-air celebration in the Adriatic resort of Dubrovnik. Instead of the fireworks display, Dubrovnik residents and their guests let 6,000 balloons fly in the air at midnight. Some 5,000 people gathered in the main square in the seaport of Rijeka for the new year's revelry. According to local authorities, about 11,000 tourists arrived in the Kvarner area to spend the New Year holidays. Major cities in eastern Croatia such as Osijek, Djakovo, Vukovar organised open-air-celebrations in squares as well. (hina) ms
