KOPRIVNICA, Dec 8 (Hina) - Asked to comment on a recent scandal regarding the Counterintelligence Agency (POA) during his visit to Koprivnica on Wednesday, President Stjepan Mesic dismissed reports that he and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader had agreed to replace POA chief Josko Podbevsek at a meeting last Friday.

Mesic said that the chairman of the Council for the Civil Supervision of Security Services, Vlatko Cvrtila, had resigned because nothing was done after the scandal. "Maybe that will help improve the situation," he added.

Asked if he had information on the possibility that PM Sanader had approved placing him (Mesic) under surveillance, the president said that nobody would dare do such a thing.

"We will probably find out who gave the approval. I believe that this will be established by the Agency itself if it wants to keep doing its job. I objected when replacements were made in the POA leadership and when more than 30 people were dismissed in only several days. The POA chief barely had time to shake hands with them, let alone become acquainted with their work. Those in charge of personnel policy in the Agency obviously sit somewhere else," Mesic said.

Stating that he had no information on wire-tapping, Mesic said that he saw no reason why citizens should be wire-tapped, himself the least, because he spoke openly in the same way as opposition leaders did.

The president also commented on reports in the latest issue of Globus weekly alleging that his son-in- law Renato Obranovic was involved in a fraud as a representative of a German company participating in the reconstruction of a medical-recreational centre in Lipik.

Mesic said this was speculation used for election purposes, adding that if it were true, he would not be living in the same apartment as at the beginning of his political career.

"I would probably own a couple of flats in Zagreb, several houses in Croatia, perhaps a villa or two abroad. Those who make such allegations should investigate where some individuals lived before and where they live today, where their children attend school and what is their financial standing. That is what reporters should investigate. They certainly won't be able to pin anything on me," he said, adding that the allegations were orchestrated by some centres and that time would prove them false.
