ZAGREB, Dec 2 (Hina) - All parliamentary clubs of deputies on Thursday supported the final bill on the transplantation of organs originating from living or dead persons for purposes of medical treatment.

Under the bill, any medical procedure related to the transplantation of parts of a human body can be performed only if medically justified, or if judged the best form of treatment.

The bill provides for the transplantation of tissue, including cells, and organs, except for reproductive organs and organs and tissues of foetuses.

It bans trade in human organs and the taking or giving of financial compensation for the taken organs.

In a debate on a bill on genetically modified organisms (GMO), opposition parties the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Croatian People's Party/Primorje-Gorski Kotar Alliance (HNS-PGS) joined the ruling parties (HDZ, HSLS/DC and representatives of national minorities) in supporting the bill, while the other opposition parties, the Peasant Party (HSS), the Party of Rights (HSP) and the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS), strongly opposed the bill.

The SDP and the HNS/PGS supported the government's intention to regulate the use of GMOs by imposing restrictive measures, while the HSS, the HSP and the IDS opposed any possibility of GMO imports and its introduction into the environment.

The bill is aimed at ensuring efficient inspections of the use of GMOs and products containing GMOs in line with EU standards.

At the end of the session, speaker Vladimir Seks accepted the opposition's request to postpone amending the agenda with new bills for tomorrow.
