HDZ PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE KOSOR SAYS SURE WILL WIN ELECTIONS

ZAGREB, Oct 24 (Hina) - Jadranka Kosor, deputy prime minister and theruling Croatian Democratic Union's presidential candidate, said onSunday she was sure she would win the presidential race.
ZAGREB, Oct 24 (Hina) - Jadranka Kosor, deputy prime minister and the ruling Croatian Democratic Union's presidential candidate, said on Sunday she was sure she would win the presidential race.

"I am sure we will win this election too. How? With an excellent platform and by recalling everything I've done, not only as a politician in Parliament and the Government, but before as well, during the war, as a journalist doing a very demanding (radio) programme and covering the displaced, refugees and victims of the Homeland War," said Kosor.

She told the press every presidential candidate must have courage as well as a good platform.

Asked if she would try to win back women's associations, which have said they will not support her in the presidential campaign, Kosor said it was not true that women's associations were turning their backs on her. She added she was certain she would win the support of women "because as deputy prime minister I've done plenty in promoting women's rights and human rights in general".

Asked if Djurdja Adlesic, the likely presidential candidate of the Social Liberals, might snatch a portion of women's votes, Kosor said she had no time to think about her opponents, but added she respected them all.

The press also asked if she recognised herself in the traits which according to some media polls the Croatian President ought to have -- have a strong personality, lead an exemplary family life, need not attend church regularly, be against swift privatisation, not endorse homosexuals but advocate the right to abortion.

Kosor replied she would shape her campaign based on polls her party conducted as to which traits the head of state should have.

The press asked if her visit today to the Sveta Ana home for the elderly and the infirm, her attendance of sports games organised by the disabled war veterans association in Zagreb, or of pensioners' sporting competitions in Virovitica yesterday, were part of her mini-campaign. Kosor said these visits were part of her duties as minister of the family, war veterans and inter-generation solidarity.

She said it would make no sense and be wrong if she stopped her projects in the Government because she was a presidential candidate. She added that once the official campaign started her tasks would be assumed by the state secretary at her ministry.

At the Sveta Ana home Kosor announced her ministry was preparing a series of projects to provide concrete assistance to the elderly and the infirm.
