ZAGREB, Oct 15 (Hina) - The average living costs of a four member family in September amounted to 5,643 kuna, up 4.1 percent from August, according to the Independent Croatian Trade Unions (NHS).

The average monthly salary in July was 4,209 kuna, which sufficed to cover only 74 percent of the minimum monthly spending, which did not include the cost of food, hygiene, clothing, housing, transport, and culture.

The average monthly salary covered most of the minimum monthly costs in Rijeka (82.89 percent) and the least in Dubrovnik (69.82 percent), while in Zagreb it covered 71.32 of the minimum costs.

NHS president Kresimir Sever said the situation was particularly difficult for pensioners as 66 percent of them received pensions lower than 2,000 kuna. The average monthly pension in September was 1,805 kuna, which enabled a pensioners' couple in Zagreb to cover only 55.43 of their minimum monthly costs.
