ZAGREB, Sept 20 (Hina) - The Croatian government has dismissed as "untrue and completely unfounded" allegations from an article carried by Jutarnji List daily under the headline "The Government to Pass New Act on the HNB (Croatian National Bank)?", and rejected speculation about the resignation of HNB Governor Zeljko Rohatinski.

The government's public relations office issued a statement on Monday, rejecting the allegation from the article that the Central Office for Development Strategy had been instructed to draft a new bill on the Croatian National Bank, stressing that the speculation about Dr Ante Babic being the chief coordinator of the project was "totally inappropriate and unverified".

"The only government body that can initiate such a change is the Ministry of Finance, which has never discussed such a proposal, let alone worked on it," the statement said.

Jutarnji List said in its Monday edition that it had information that the bill was "at an advanced stage of preparation", and that there were rumours in political circles that Rohatinski was leaving the post of governor of the central bank.

The newspaper carried a statement by Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks, who described the rumours as "totally unfounded speculation".
