The association's president, Zeljko Sacic, said the association wanted the "heroic defence of Gospic, which was shelled constantly from occupied areas, never to be forgotten".
He went on to say that "Homeland War heroes, to whom present and future generations are indebted, deserve to be treated better than they were treated by the former government, because their social status today is unbearable".
Many war veterans are jobless, some are outside Croatia, and some of them are criminalised, Sacic said.
Seven members of special police forces and the Croatian Army were killed and another 100 were wounded in Operation Medak Pocket, which was carried out on September 9, 11 years ago, Sacic said.
Unfortunately, the Croatian public is familiar with the operation mostly through indictments which the Hague war crimes tribunal issued against its commanders - the late general Janko Bobetko, Rahim Ademi, Mirko Norac and Mladen Markac, Sacic said.
