ZAGREB, Aug 27 (Hina) - This year's tourist season is the best since Croatia achieved independence, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said at a government session on Friday.

Tourism Minister Bozidar Kalmeta said the results of this year's tourist season exceeded last year's, until now the best so far, by five percent, and that no incidents occurred during the season.

In this year's first seven months, Croatia logged 4.85 million tourist arrivals, up five percent from the same time in 2003. They accounted for 24.66 million overnights, an increase of one percent.

According to central bank data for January-March 2004, revenue from foreign tourists went up 11.8 percent from the same time the previous year.

According to National Board of Tourism data, 473,000 tourist arrivals were recorded this August, up seven percent from August 2003.

Kalmeta said these data indicated the tourist turnover planned for this year would be realised.

Finance Minister Ivan Suker said the good tourist turnover was reflected in the national budget's revenue. Revenue in August 2004 went up 15 percent from August 2003, which is the direct effect of economic activities undertaken in July, he said.

Suker said that in the next two weeks, his ministry would move a bill on financial police which would start operating on January 1, 2005.

The finance ministry is also finishing amendments to the income tax law, said Suker, adding talks were under way with the sea ministry on how to tax bed renting in tourism.
