SPLIT, Aug 19 (Hina) - Commenting on the Supreme Court's decision to revoke the acquitting verdict for eight men accused of war crimes in the Lora prison near Split in 1992, defence attorneys Vinko Ljubicic and Slobodan Mikulic told Hina on Thursday that in their opinion the decision of the Supreme Court was absolutely unnecessary because they would prove at the re-trail there were no war crimes in Lora

Ljubicic said he expected an acquitting verdict at the re-trial as well. The Lora case is very important and very sensitive, he said and added he was surprised with the fact that it took so long for the Supreme Court to voice its opinion regarding the appeal filed by the Prosecutor's Office.

Ljubicic said the Supreme Court started debated the appeal on March 25, but voiced its opinion only today.

In November 2002, the County Court in Split acquitted eights former military police officers of crimes against civilians. The trial lasted for six months during which some 60 witnesses were took the stand, but witnesses from Serbia and Montenegro were not heard because they failed to appear in court even though subpoenaed on several occasions.

The Supreme Court revoked the verdict today and ordered a re-trial.
