The new anthem, a combination of an old Serbian royal hymn and a Montenegrin folk song, was composed and forwarded to parliament for approval for it to be sung at the opening of the Olympic Games in Athens.
Most of the union's deputies agreed to support the new hymn, but Montenegrin deputies changed their mind after the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Pavle said the words to the Montenegrin anthem were written by a Nazi and a fascist, Sekula Drljevic.
Since Podgorica and Belgrade signed a deal which redefined the former Yugoslavia into a new loose federation, Serbia and Montenegro has used the old Yugoslav anthem Hej Slaveni".
