Minister Milinovic says HDZ won't jettison social welfare bill

ZAGREB, April 1 (Hina) - The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) will not withdraw the welfare bill from the procedure, as requested by the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP), Health and Social Welfare Minister and HDZ Deputy President Darko Milinovic told a news conference in Zagreb on Friday.

Commenting on a news conference which the SDP held earlier in the day, Milinovic said that today was All Fools' Day and the intention of the SDP was to fool the public.

Milinovic countered that no entitlement or right from the social security system would be abolished, adding that some new entitlements would be introduced.

He said that in the last year of the HDZ government in 1999, a total of 45,179 children were born, while in the last year of the SDP rule in 2003, this figure dropped to 39,668, which he said spoke about the "social sensitivity " of the latter.

As for means tests and qualification for welfare benefits, Milinovic said the new legislation would define criteria more clearly and accurately.
