PULA, May 14 (Hina) - Istrian County Prefect Ivan Jakovcic told a news conference in Pula on Friday that during his recent meeting with European Commission President Romano Prodi in Brussels he urged the EC to engage European regions to a greater extent in decision-making, regardless of whether they are EU member states or not.
PULA, May 14 (Hina) - Istrian County Prefect Ivan Jakovcic told a news conference in Pula on Friday that during his recent meeting with European Commission President Romano Prodi in Brussels he urged the EC to engage European regions to a greater extent in decision-making, regardless of whether they are EU member states or not.#L# He also urged that regions be allowed to decide on their own on banning genetically modified organisms, independently of whether such products had already been okayed in Europe. In this context Jakovcic recalled that Istria County joined in the network of eight European regions which insist on banning GMOs. Jakovcic praised the government led by Prime Minister Ivo Sanader for its policy towards the European Union. He also described the Croatian government's position towards ethnic minorities as correct. "This government is carrying out an acceptable policy towards ethnic minorities, notably towards the Serb community, creating an atmosphere of inter-ethnic tolerance," Jakovcic said. (Hina) ms
