ZAGREB, April 9 (Hina) - Croatian General Mladen Markac is feeling well
after undergoing heart artery dilation on Thursday evening at a
hospital in The Hague where he was taken after feeling sick in the
detention unit of the U.N. war crimes tribunal, his attorney Miroslav
Separovic said on Friday.#L#
"It wasn't a classic operation but minor surgery after which Markac
was transferred back to the detention unit at his request," Separovic
told Hina over the telephone, adding that doctors announced the same
surgery would be done on the second coronary artery soon.
Separovic and Markac's other attorney, Goran Mikulicic, are worried
about the health of their client, who has suffered two heart attacks
to date and has high blood sugar. They think he needs hospital
treatment.
On April 1 the Hague tribunal held a hearing following a request by
Markac and another Croatian general, Ivan Cermak, to be provisionally
released pending trial. No decision was issued by Good Friday when the
tribunal was closed.
Markac and Cermak are charged with crimes against humanity and war
crimes committed against Serb civilians in the Knin area during and
after 1995's Operation Storm. They voluntarily surrendered to the
Hague tribunal on March 11. The following day they pleaded not guilty
to all six counts of the indictment against them.
