"This is most definitely a success, but not the end of the path. In fact, we are at the beginning of the path at which a lot is to be done. We must complete a part of that job next year. We must negotiate in a way to express our readiness to join the EU and show that we also know how to defend our vital national interests," Mesic said.
In his New Year's message, the Croatian president said progress was made in 2006, adding that there were some positive and encouraging examples, adding however, that overall not enough had been done.
"I primarily refer to the fact that we do not yet have an integral economic development strategy. It is announced for mid 2006 and I sincerely hope that it will happen by then," Mesic said.
He said Croatia must develop market competition but not to the detriment of the welfare state, adding that trade unions must be even more aggressive in representing the interests of workers.
Wishing Croatian citizens all the best in 2006, President Mesic said that key tasks before Croatia were the continuation of EU membership talks, the strengthening of stability and peace in the region, consistent implementation of international obligations, the strengthening of contacts with the world so as to promote own economic and political interests, as well as creating conditions for a better life of Croatian citizens.
Commenting on important events in te world, Mesic said that the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II and the establishment of the United Nations was marked this year. He said the world continued to face global terrorism in 2005.
