IZMIR, Dec 7 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Wednesday opened an honorary consulate of the Republic of Croatia in Izmir, Turkey, which should promote the two countries' cooperation in the economy and tourism.

The consulate will be led by Candan Corbacioglu, a Turkish business woman who has been doing business with Croatia for years.

The consulate is located in downtown Izmir, Turkey's business centre and a fair city on the coast of the Aegean sea. It is expected to promote economic and tourist ties between Croatia and Turkey.

Also held was a Croatia-Turkey business forum. Opening the forum in the Izmir Chamber of Commerce, President Mesic said the two countries' economic cooperation had great potential which must be cultivated and developed by businessmen and politicians.

Representatives of the Croatian Chamber of the Economy and some 20 Croatian companies presented themselves to Turkish business people at the forum.

In the first half of 2005, Croatia's exports to Turkey amounted to some 29 million US dollars while imports totalled 78.5 million.

To promote economic ties, the two countries signed a free trade agreement in 2003. Croatian and Turkish officials hope to advance economic relations with a memorandum of cooperation signed by representatives of the the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Turkey's export bank Exim in the presence of the Croatian and Turkish heads of state.

By visiting Izmir, Mesic ended his official two-day trip to Turkey.
