ZAGREB, Nov 19 (Hina) - Croatia is prepared for defence against avian influenza in all segments, Health and Social Welfare Minister Neven Ljubicic said on Saturday at a meeting of health ministers in Vouliagmeni near Athens, Greece, which was held as part of the process of cooperation of Southeast European countries regarding bird flu.

According to a statement from the Croatian Embassy to Athens, Ljubicic said that Croatia was one of the few countries conducting continued monitoring of the possible presence of the avian flu virus among migratory birds.

The statement said that Croatia was given the honour of organising the next meeting of health ministers from Southeast Europe next year.

The meeting was attended by health ministers from 14 countries of Southeast Europe and the Black Sea region, who reported on their national preparedness plans for an outbreak of bird flu.

European Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou was quoted by the French news agency AFP as saying on the margins of the conference that the European Union would provide all the necessary technical support for combating avian flu, but not financial assistance.

Participants in the meeting said in a final statement that transparency and full solidarity of all institutions, agencies, ministries and countries affected by avian influenza was the key to effective cooperation, according to AFP.

Of the countries represented at the conference, the H5N1 bird flu virus has been found in Turkey, Romania, Croatia and Russia.
