ZAGREB, Oct 21 (Hina) - The Delegation of the European Commission in Croatia and Croatia's Public Procurement Control Commission on Friday presented a project aimed at strengthening this state-run commission, which the European Union finances with 600,000 euros through the CARDS programme.

The project supports efforts of the commission to meet conditions in relation to the auditing of public procurement in accordance with regulations from Chapter 5 of the acquis communautaire.

The 18-month-long project was launched in August, and is being carried out with the support of relevant experts from Slovenia.

This is one of the two twinning projects which are being carried out in the public procurement sector in Croatia and which are financed by the EU.

A parallel project is being conducted by the Public Procurement Office in cooperation with partners from Germany and Slovenia.

The total value of the two projects is 1.5 million euros.

After today's presentation of the CARDS project, the head of the Public Procurement Control Commission, Goran Matesic, told Hina, that Croatia would probably not seek national preferences in public procurement processes at the country's accession negotiations with the European bloc.

Matesic said that insistence on preference of domestic procurers to foreign ones would entail a series of legal problems which would render public procurement procedure more difficult. As a result, this could cause problems in the work of public administration.
