ZAGREB, Oct 20 (Hina) - Pig farming in Croatia is characterised by
small production units, a small number of animals, low technology and a poor
genetic base, which requires changes to the system of development of this
sector in order to make it competitive on open markets and adjust it to trends
in the European Union. This was said by Ivan Jakopovic, head of the
Department for Cattle Production at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and
Water Management, who presented a proposed programme for the development of pig
farming at the Croatian Society of Agronomy on Thursday.
The programme provides for the construction of 500 new farms, with each
farm having an average of 150 sows.
The government plans to invest 2.17 billion kuna (about 293 million
euros) in the development of pig farming in order to achieve a production
target of about 161,000 tonnes of pork over the next five years.
