Speaking to Hina on the phone from The Hague, she said the chief prosecutor was dismayed by the decision because there were other political figures among the tribunal's accused, yet the question of their political activity had never been raised.
Hartmann recalled that the Office of the Prosecutor had objected to the provisional release of Haradinaj due to influence on witnesses, and said his political activity could only augment this influence.
A panel of judges chaired by Carmel Agius decided with a majority vote on Wednesday to allow Haradinaj to be politically active in public, with the previous approval of the UN Mission to Kosovo. This is the first time that an indictee has been allowed to engage in politics pending trial.
A former senior commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Haradinaj was indicted in March for war crimes against Serbs, Roma and Albanians committed during the conflict in Kosovo in 1998. He immediately surrendered to the Hague tribunal and was provisionally released on June 6.
