SPLIT, Oct 13 (Hina) - The investigating judge of the Split County Court, Neven Cambi, has decided to discontinue the detention of journalist Josip Jovic who was arrested after he had failed to appear before the Hague-based UN war crimes tribunal, the Split County Court reported on Thursday.

Judge Neven Cambi decided on the termination of Jovic's detention after his lawyer handed over Jovic's suggestion that the court should make it possible for him to travel to The Hague, cutting short any further procedure before the Croatian courts.

Jovic left the building of the Split County Court shortly before 1600 hrs Thursday, and was escorted by the police to the Bilice prison in the coastal city.

He is expected to be released soon.

Judge Cambi also decided on security measures so as to ensure the arrival of Jovic before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), which indicted this former editor-in-chief of the Slobodna Dalmacija daily for contempt of court.

The spokeswoman for the Split County Court, Marica Scepanovic, declined to give any more information explaining that the decision and agreement were a secret.

Jovic's lawyer Vinko Ljubicic also declined to give any statement to reporters.

Jovic was arrested on October 6 by Croatian police acting on a September 28 arrest warrant issued by the Hague tribunal after he failed to appear before the UN court to plead. On 9 September, the tribunal indicted him for having revealed in his articles the identity and excerpts of a testimony of a protected witness at the trial of former Bosnian Croat military leader General Tihomir Blaskic.
