ZAGREB, Oct 10 (Hina) - The Croatian Ministry of Agriculture has banned the import and transit of poultry and poultry products from Turkey and Romania in an effort to prevent the spread of bird flue, ministry spokesman Mladen Pavic told Hina on Monday.

Croatia has earlier banned poultry imports from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, Cambodia, China, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan.

This week the ministry plans to start monitoring and examining the health of free-living and migratory birds in their natural habitats. The monitoring will also be expanded to include farms.

Avian flu is hard to be expected at poultry farms in Croatia because they maintain high standards and have been under supervision for decades.

Noting that there was no reason for panic in Croatia, the ministry said that the import ban had been imposed out of precaution, because bird flue had appeared in countries close to Croatia.

Early in September, the Croatian government set up a commission to monitor the epidemiological situation and prevent avian influenza.

The World Trade Organisation has not confirmed the appearance of bird flue in Turkey and Romania.
