Sarajevo: Document on armed forces reform signed

SARAJEVO, July 18 (Hina) - The Bosnian Defence Reform Commission, chaired by Defence Minister Nikola Radovanovic and representative of the international community Raffi Gregorian, on Monday signed a document proposing the cancellation of the entity defence ministries (the ministry of the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina and the ministry of Republika Srpska) and military service as well as the implementation of the professional military system in Bosnia which would have between 9,000 and 10,000 members.

The document foresees the adoption of a new defence law and a law on military service in the Bosnian Armed Forces by the end of this year at the latest.

The international community's High Representative, Paddy Ashdown, said that the proposal for the reorganisation of the defence and armed forces in Bosnia was one of the biggest turning points after the signing of the Dayton Agreement.

Raffi Gregorian said that the armed forces reforms would help Bosnia join Euro-Atlantic integration processes.
