PODGORICA, July 9 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said in an interview for Podgorica-based Vijesti daily of Saturday that Croatia would recognise Montenegro's independence if a referendum showed that this was the will of the Montenegrin people, adding that Croatia would not wait for great powers to recognise Montenegro first.

Mesic said that Croatian politicians would take into consideration the reality of the situation, saying that Croatia was in a similar situation when a referendum on its independence was organised.

"Given that Croatia today is led by people who acknowledge the political reality, and I belong to that group of people, we will definitely recognise the reality of Montenegro's independence (...)," said Mesic.

Asked whether he could understand the Montenegrin political leadership which had been impressed with the power of Slobodan Milosevic, Mesic said Montenegro was too small comparing to Serbia and that it did not surprise that it was impressed with the standpoints of Serbia which was backed by the entire former Yugoslav Army.

"Clearly the army also impressed somebody," said Mesic and expressed satisfaction with his visit to Montenegro because the local authorities there advocated Europeasation and democratisation of the entire region.
