President says it isn't good to make accusations with no evidence

ZAGREB, March 1 (Hina) - Asked to comment on government spokesman Mladen Pavic's statement that part of opposition parties were behind of riots during protests organised through Facebook, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said on Tuesday that "it is not good to make accusations without proof, particularly in the current situation when the society needs stability".

Asked whether the spokesman Pavic should resign, Josipovic said that "he is the spokesman for the government and if the government thinks that he is doing damage it will replace him, and if it does not think so it will keep him".

"It is also important that the spokesman enjoys the trust of the public, but it is on the government to assess it," the president said in a break of a conference on Croatian media in the struggle against corruption in Zagreb.

Asked about a petition of Serbs who fled Croatia and who now ask Serbia to state in a declaration that Croatia is violating Croatian Serb refugees' rights, Josipovic said he was aware that there were problems.

However, Croatia has pointed out refugee returns and the regulation of ownership over property for all its citizens as one of its priorities and Croatia is intensively working on that, the president said.

"There are people who perhaps have reasons to be dissatisfied, but I think that Croatia is showing good progress in solving those problems and there is no need to, let me say, throw spanners into the wheels," Josipovic said recalling that there was an agreement on organising an international conference for raising funds for this purpose.
