ZAGREB, June 23 (Hina) - Despite the recent death of a cow
suffering from mad cow disease in Austria, Croatia will not ban the import of
baby beef and beef from Austria because Austria is taking all protection
measures against mad cow disease infection, the Croatian Agriculture Ministry
said on Thursday. Austria has a very strict system of mad cow
disease control and the dead cow was infected probably before it was imported
to Austria from Germany, ministry spokesman Mladen Pavic said.
Last year, Croatia imported 2,400 live heifer and only 190 tonnes of
meat from Austria, Pavic said, adding the meat was screened for mad cow
disease.
