ZAGREB, June 23 (Hina) - The opening of the 380 kilometres-long Zagreb-Split highway is the realisation of a great Croatian dream, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said at a Government session on Thursday adding that everything was ready for the opening.

This is project is of a historic importance and all of us can be proud of it, the PM said and stressed that the project was completed several days before the deadline.

He thanked all generations of Croatia's politicians who advocated the building of the highway which will connect the continental Croatia and the Adriatic.

Croatian Minister Bozidar Kalmeta said that everything was ready for the opening of all 380 kilometres of the highway,

The highway would be opened for the general public on Monday morning, the minister said.

The toll for the entire highway would cost 157 kuna (approx. EUR21.5).

Sanader and Kalmeta thanked all those who worked on the highway -- construction workers, project engineers, etc.

Sunday's ceremony marking the completion of the highway would start at noon at Zagreb's central Ban Jelacic Square and it will end in Split's Riva waterfront on the same evening. The red-ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on the bridge over the Krka river near Skradin.

Kalmeta said that construction works would continue on other highways in Croatia, adding that the semi-highway connecting Zagreb and Rijeka would be turned into a normal highway by the end of 2008.

The transport minister underlined that tolls on Croatia's highways would stay the same for the first group of vehicle - 0.4 kuna per kilometre and 0.38 kuna per kilometre on the Rijeka-Rupa section.

The construction of the Zagreb-Split highway, the A1 highway, was one of the biggest construction and investment projects in Croatia. The cabinet of the former Prime Minister Ivica Racan adopted the decision on the construction of the highway in October 2001.

The entire project is worth 17 billion kuna excluding Value Added Tax. It covers the construction of the 380 kilometre-long section on which a total of 292 facilities, namely 26 bridges, 50 viaducts, 91 overhead railroads, 78 underpasses, 25 passes, 14 tunnels and five crossings for animals, have been built.

In the network of planned roads, this highways makes a connection between two vital European directions, direction E-59 Maribor-Zagreb-Split and direction E-65 Rijeka-Split-Dubrovnik.

On the section from Zagreb to Bosiljevo 2, the highway is part of the European corridor Vb (Budapest-Zagreb-Rijeka) so this section is also a part of the Zagreb-Rijeak highway.

The Zagreb-Split highway is equipped with the most up-to-date surveillance and traffic control systems.
