VINKOVCI, June 18 (Hina) - The Vukovar County Police Department is checking reports published by the Croatian and Serbian media alleging that the vice-president of the Serbian Radical Party, Tomislav Nikolic, took part in the murder of several elderly people from the village of Antin near the eastern Croatian town of Vinkovci at the time when the area was under Serb occupation, department spokesman Miroslav Janic told Hina on Saturday.

The Belgrade-based nongovernmental organisation called the Fund for Humanitarian Law recently accused Nikolic of the murder of several elderly people who stayed in Antin during the occupation of the village by Serb forces.

"The events in Antin are part of an investigation into war crimes that were committed in the area during the Serb aggression and occupation of the Croatian Danube River region," Janic told Hina.

The media have published reports by the residents of Antin about the torture and killing of civilians whose bodies were dumped in a pool, and one villager claimed he was certain that Nikolic had been in Antin because he forced him into a minefield.

The Belgrade media quoted a former member of the government of the assassinated Serbian PM Zoran Djindjic, who said that Nikolic himself had boasted about having killed elderly people.

Tomislav Nikolic has told the Serbian media that it is not true that he took part in the murders in Antin with which he is being charged.
