BEIJING, May 27 (Hina) - Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday received for talks Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, who was on an official visit to China.

After the talks in Beijing, Sanader said that good and friendly relations between Croatia and China were the basis for the future cooperation, particularly in the economic sector.

Sanader told reporters that his meeting with President Hu, as well as his talks with Prime Minister Wen Jiabao on Thursday were a step forward in the enhancement of overall bilateral relations.

During the part of their meeting that was open to public, President Hu Jintao congratulated Sanader on his successful visit to China, and said he would like to see further promotion of bilateral cooperation.

Sanader stressed that there were no outstanding issues in the relations between the two countries. The two countries' friendly relations are based on two important issues - Croatia supports the policy of one China, and China supported Croatia's sovereignty during the Greater Serbian occupation of parts of Croatian territory, when it was very important for the country, Sanader said.

The policy of one China means recognition of the sovereignty of the People's Republic of China over Taiwan, which is very important for China.

Commenting on the possibility of advancing economic cooperation, Sanader said that he would advocate greater presence of Croatian companies on the big Chinese market.

In addition, Croatian seaports of Rijeka and Ploce can serve as gateways for Chinese products intended for the markets of central and eastern Europe.

Sanader and his Chinese hosts also discussed international issues and cooperation in multilateral organisation as well as the role and reform of the United Nations.

"It is our joint position that the UN should assume a greater role in solving crises and in fighting terrorism, human trafficking and other evils of the contemporary world," the Croatian premier said. He added that the Chinese officials had promised to consider a proposal to support Croatia's candidacy for nonpermanent membership of the UN Security Council in 2008 and 2009.
