In 1989 Tudjman set as goals Croatia's independence and entry into the then European Community. The first goal was achieved after the brilliant victories in the military and police operations "Flash" and "Storm" and we won't allow anyone to change the truth about those operations, Sanader stressed.
The second goal - Croatia's admission to the EU - is not an easy one and the government is doing all in its power to achieve it. Some sacrifices will have to be made in that process, but there is no alternative, the PM said, adding that his government was trying to make Croatia a stable, democratic and prosperous country. He recalled the contribution the late Pope John Paul II made to Croatia's independence by recognising the country and supporting it on its road to the EU.
The PM also said that it was a shame that Zagreb did not have a square named after the first Croatian president or a monument dedicated to him, adding he expected this to change after Sunday's local elections and the new city government to accept his proposal in that regard.
