ZAGREB, May 5 (Hina) - Members of the Jewish community and senior Croatian government officials lit candles and laid wreaths at Zagreb's Mirogoj Cemetery on Thursday to mark Yom Hashoa, Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Wreaths were laid by delegations of the Croatian Federation of Antifascist Fighters, the Coordinating Body of Jewish Communities of Croatia, the Jewish community of Zagreb, the President of Croatia, the Parliament, the Government, the Council for National Minorities, the United States Embassy, and the City of Zagreb.

Remembering the six million Jews killed during the Second World War, the head of the Jewish community in Croatia, Ognjen Kraus, said: "When we speak of the Holocaust, we speak of genocide. We warn and we call for the fight against evil."

Kraus said that the Holocaust conference, which took place in Stockholm in 2000, turned a new page in interpreting and learning about the Holocaust, because before that the Holocaust was considered "Jewish preoccupation".

He said that 53,000 Jews had survived concentration camps in Europe.

Attending the ceremony were President Stjepan Mesic, Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor, Parliament Vice-President Luka Bebic, Zagreb Mayor Vlasta Pavic, her deputy Milan Bandic, and representatives of religious communities, political parties, the diplomatic corps, public figures and citizens.
