THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, April 20 (Hina) - Ex-Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic has dangerously high blood pressure and is at risk of a heart attack, according to a physician's report read at the Hague war crimes tribunal on Wednesday.

The trial was adjourned despite yesterday's announcements that the defendant's court-appointed attorney, Steven Kay, would examine witnesses without Milosevic's presence.

The report, read out by presiding Judge Patrick Robinson, said the 63-year-old Milosevic's therapy was changed and that he would be re-examined next Monday. The trial chamber requested that a new report be submitted this Friday.

Milosevic's trial, which began on 12 February 2002, has been adjourned around 15 times so far because of the defendant's heart condition. After he began representing himself last October, Milosevic was in good health and was absent only once due to a flu, which prompted the Prosecution to suggest that the trial be held five instead of three days a week. Milosevic, on the other hand, requested breaks so that he could rest from the strain of preparing his defence and examining witnesses.

The latest upshot seems to confirm that his request was justified, but also recalls prosecutor Geoffrey Nice's claims that Milosevic was manipulating his blood pressure by altering his therapy.

Milosevic is charged with 66 counts of genocide, crimes against humanity, violations of the laws and customs of war, and grave breaches of the Geneva conventions over his role in the 1990s wars in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo, which claimed the lives of more than 200,000 people.
