ZAGREB, Jan 21 (Hina) - Croatia's full cooperation with the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) does not imply
the obligatory transfer of General Ante Gotovina, but the Croatian government
needs to prove that it fully cooperates with the ICTY, German Ambassador to
Croatia Juergen A.R. Staks said on Friday.Negotiations will surely start on March 17 provided that there is 100
percent cooperation between the Croatian government and the Hague tribunal,
Staks told a news conference in Zagreb.
He stressed that there was no official talk of the extradition of
General Gotovina as an indicator of full cooperation, but that the Croatian
government needed to provide evidence assuring the tribunal of its full
cooperation. Staks did not explain what would qualify as evidence of full
cooperation.
Gotovina's extradition would prove that Croatia was cooperating 120
percent, the ambassador said, adding that he expected Croatia to become a full
EU member in 2009.
