ZAGREB, Jan 13 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Thursday supported the adoption of a joint statement by parliament and the government on cooperation in negotiations for EU membership and a parliamentary act which would establish fundamental principles of Croatia's joining the European Union.

The government said that given the importance of this act, it should be adopted with a consensus of all parliamentary parties.

The government supported the work of an inter-parliamentary task force in charge of drawing up an adequate act which would define the fundamental principles of Croatia's joining the EU.

Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said the consensus was necessary if Croatia wanted to be stronger during the negotiations.

Croatia's chief negotiator for the EU, Vladimir Drobnjak said that even though it was facing a difficult job during the negotiations process, Croatia had no reason not to be optimistic.
