Croatian environmentalist group in favour of activating exclusive economic zone in Adriatic

ZAGREB, Dec 14 (Hina) - A group of Adriatic environmentalist associations called "Plavi forum" issued a statement on Thursday saying that the only appropriate way of protecting the Adriatic Sea was activating an exclusive economic zone in the Adriatic, in line with UN regulations, and declaring the Adriatic Sea a particularly vulnerable area, in line with regulations of the International Maritime Organisation.

The group believes that all other measures, including the current argument about the activation of the Ecological and Fisheries Protection Zone (EFPZ), are "incomplete political compromises".

The group claims that there is no reason not to activate immediately the ecological component of the EFPZ, "the more so as such a unilateral move was made early this year by Italy".

"The ecological component of the EFPZ is not part of the EU's acquis communautaire, which is being negotiated with Brussels, so there are no legal grounds for challenging such a decision".

The association warns about the fact that more than 250 pollution incidents caused by ships are reported in the Adriatic every year and that with the ecological component of the EFPZ already activated in the Italian part of the Adriatic, risks and pollution in the Croatian part would drastically increase.

In 2005 alone, 1,870 tankers entered Croatian ports, the group said, adding that it would request the European Green Party to initiate the procedure to investigate the lawfulness of what it calls the open lobbying of European Commission officials for the interests of Italian fishermen to the detriment of Croatian interests and the protection of the entire Adriatic, reads the statement, signed by the network's coordinator, Vjeran Pirsic.
