BELGRADE, Nov 17 (Hina) - A delegation of the non-governmental
organisation "Women in Mourning", which gathers women from Belgrade and 20
other towns from throughout Serbia, is to visit the eastern Croatian town of
Vukovar on Saturday to ask forgiveness from the families of people killed by
Serbian forces 15 years ago and to stress the need for punishing those
responsible. "Out of respect for those killed and as an expression
of our admission of responsibility for the crimes that were committed in our
name, we will visit the scene of crime in order to ask for forgiveness and
reaffirm our intention not to allow the crimes committed in Vukovar to be left
to historical oblivion," the NGO said in a statement.
It is with sadness and with a feeling of shame that we remember the
tragedy of Vukovar, which culminated this time 15 years ago. We remember the
first in a series of grave and unforgivable crimes that were committed in our
name. We remember, knowing that the evil was unleashed from Belgrade," the
statement said.
