The two presidents agreed that Malta could be of great assistance to Croatia during negotiations on fisheries.
"Malta can help us a great deal because it managed to protect its own national interests, and our negotiators will certainly have Malta's support," Mesic said.
Fenech-Adami, who was on his first official visit to Croatia, said that his country's talks on fishers had been very tough.
We managed to make it clear to the Union that it was impossible to apply general rules, but that specific characteristics of each country should be taken into account, the Maltese president said.
Asked by a reporter to comment on the recent statement by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso that there should be a pause in the enlargement process after the admission of Bulgaria and Romania, Mesic said there were different comments on that.
"We have started the negotiations and we will finish them, and most of the EU member countries support Croatia on its path to membership. Croatia's entry into the EU is not important only for Croatia but also for the whole region, because it will motivate other countries to meet the necessary conditions and adopt European standards," the Croatian president said.
Speaking of cooperation between Croatia and Malta, Mesic said that both countries were willing to cooperate and that bilateral relations had been improving over the past years, albeit insufficiently. He stressed that there was a desire to reaffirm the high level of political cooperation through boosting economic ties.
The two presidents agreed that there was enough room for the further promotion of cooperation, particularly in the economic sector, and expressed hope that the group of prominent Maltese business people accompanying Fenech-Adami on the visit and their Croatian colleagues would find ways of boosting trade at a joint business forum.
Maltese business people have already discovered possibilities of doing business with Croatia, Fenech-Adami said.
Also discussed was the situation in Southeast Europe, with the Maltese president saying that he and Mesic have identical views on the matter. Fenech-Adami commended Mesic for playing an important role in stabilising the situation both in Croatia and in the region.
During their meeting, Mesic awarded Fenech-Adami the Order of King Tomislav with the Ribbon and the Great Morning Star for his contribution to the promotion of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, while the Maltese president presented his host with the insignia of Companion of Honour with the Collar of the National Order of Merit.
The Maltese president later met for talks with the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament, Vladimir Seks.
